WOODSTAGE OPEN AIR FESTIVAL
June 3, 2000
Glauchau, Saxony
by John Harford
Fields of the Nephilim - Not much more I can say about this act that I have
not already stated. The years of waiting paid off. I can only hope they
continue on their current path and increase touring/production schedule.
The crowd of ardent FoTN supporters was disappointingly small, but what was
lacking in numbers was made up for in enthusiasm. They were always a cult
band with an intense and small following, so it is fitting they remain that
way. Their set list was as follows:
- The Haromonica Man
- Preacherman
- Moonchild
- Love Under Will
- For Her Light
- Trees Come Down
- Shine
- Zoon
- Exodus
- Dawnrazor
- Psychonaut
Only hour and change, but worth the long wait from a
previously clear sky with clouds rolling in as they took the stage, by the
end of Psychonaut, it was raining. Minutes later it abated. No shit. It
gave me chills.
I hope to see them as a true headliner in a club or theater, and witness a
longer set. I would still like to see two guitars at work but the
"reunion" was always intended to be a foursome.
Overall impressions of the festival: like a big party in the park
(literally, we were lakeside) with good music. Crowd was fun, even though
I couldn't speak at length to a majority of people there (but my friend
Lilith who accompanied me on this leg of the adventure could). Several
seemed fascinated that an American had actually traveled to Glauchau to see
a show. Lots of different affordable food and vendors (try getting Indian
food or mystical supplies at an American show). Everything from public
spankings to people with kids and pets. I would gladly attend a Woodstage
Open Air show again.
