FIELDS OF THE NEPHILIM
FROM GEHENNA TO HERE
Q MAGAZINE
Though there's room for everybody in life's rich musical pageant, most
people with ears sensibly drew the line at Fields Of The Nephilim. An
amalgam of their self-financed 1985 debut EP, Burning The Fields, and the
following year's Italian-only release, Returning To Gehenna, this nine-track
collection begs the obvious question: how did they ever get off the ground?
Aligned to a laughably feeble production, Carl McCoy's ludicrous, bowel-deep
croon and dark mutterings carry all the menace of a pantomime villain in
woolly pink tights. With time, they did improve. But not much.
